Vintage Cameras

Today, we are all photographers. Smart phones make it super easy to snap some pretty ok images, and some pretty spectacular ones too. But once upon a time, taking a photo required a lot of skill and equipment. Dad was a hobbyist photographer, but mostly, snapped a pic here and there on vacation and to document our childhood.

Minolta was his brand, but he started with a Kodak, tried Contaflex and Olympus and even Stereo Realist (sort of, he only shot a few rolls of film) . And of course - home movies. Lots of fun with home movies.

Here's a glimpse.

Vintage camera equipment. Minolta Rokkor, Minolta X-700, Minolta Maxxum 7000, Tokina ATX Lens 24mm-40MM, GE PR1 Exposure Meter, Metrastar Meter, Weston Master IV Meter, Minolta Zoom 8, Contaflex Zeiss Ikon, Kodak Motormatic 35, Heiland Flash, Flash Bulbs Westinghouse Sylvania GE Norelco 5B 25B and more.

Cookie Cutters! 1950s to 1970s

Vintage Hallmark Cookie Cutters

One of my fondest memories as a child was all the cookie baking we did throughout the year. It was messy, but it was fun! Christmas was my favorite with my mother's famous gingerbread cookies & all the decorations we piled on top. Best ever. Her recipe is listed below.

Mom’s Gingerbread Cookies
Keep dough chilled until 15 minutes before you are ready to use. Easy to work with. Excellent cut-out cookies for kids.

1 cup shortening or butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup molasses
1 egg
3 ½-4 ½ cups flour (add slowly for variance!!)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp ground cloves
2 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp salt

    1.    Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in molasses and egg.
    2.    Add dry ingredients. Blend well. (Dough should feel quite soft before chilling. Do not add more flour unless because of variance in flours the dough is very sticky.)
    3.    CHILL OVERNIGHT.
    4.    Roll out 1/8-1/4” thick. Cut shapes. Decorate before or after baking with decorates, raisins, etc.
    5.    Use powdered sugar instead of flour when rolling out for a more tender product.
    6.    Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350° for 10 minutes.
    7.    Loosen cookies with a spatula then cool before removing from sheets.
    8.    To hang cookies on a tree: Cut a drinking straw into 1” lengths. Push one into each unbaked cookie. Bake. Remove straws by gently twisting out while cookies are still warm.
Makes 2-3 dozen cookies

  • Garcia Mitchell 300 reel circa 1954 with original box & extra spool. Serial# 1 003575 - printed in box and on reel. Just used a few times. The small wear on reel is because Dad "caught a really big fish." - We think this one is among the last 4th version models that became the Mitchell 300. The famous “300” is still not engraved on these reels but Garcia as well as other distributors first started placing their stickers on this version. On all of these, if you remove the Garcia stickers, they will look just like the European versions. (source: mitchellreelmuseum.com)
