Antique Embroidery Transfers from Butterick and Pictorial Review

1900s Pictorial Review Embroidery
Transfer Pattern 12348

My great grandmother's steamer trunk has been a time capsule of the early 1900s, including these fantastic embroidery transfer patterns.

From what we can tell, very few transfer patterns have survived the years as there are so few available currently or historically via the internet. It's been a challenge to find any information on the ones we discovered. We did find some great information on the Sewing Palette website as follows:

"Butterick, founded in 1863, is the oldest surviving pattern company. Well into the 1920s, Butterick transfers came in the same brown kraft envelopes used for its sewing patterns (although we've seen at least one yellow envelope.) Transfers were single-use raised ink -- generally available in yellow or blue -- on tissue sheets. Sometime in the 1920s the envelopes became glossy white with black graphics and the transfers became Silvertex (raised silver ink). Dating early Butterick transfers can be done, but the transfer numbering system is elusive. (Our 1916 counter catalog has transfers numbered 1991, 10013, 10448, 6690, 10615 and 2358. There's no obvious pattern to the numbers, although most of them are in the 10xxx series.) Butterick apparently stopped producing transfers in the early to mid-1930s -- which coincides with a period of financial troubles that led to the company's restructuring. The popular 40s and 50s themes such as days-of-the-week tea towels have many makers, but Butterick is not among them. The modern line of Butterick transfer patterns seems to have started in the 1970s. "

Mercerized Crochet from J.&P. Coats

J & P Coats Mercerized Crochet
A fantastic box of Mercerized Crochet from, we think, the 1940s. The company J.&P. Coats was started in 1830 by James & Peter Clark in Scotland. The firm expanded internationally, especially in US and in 1890 listed on the London Stock Exchange. In 1952, they merged with the Clark Thread Co.

Antique & Vintage Sewing Patterns 1900s - 1940s

Little did I know my grandmother Hilda made most of her clothes over her lifetime. Hiding in the family steamer trunk were these amazing vintage patterns from the 1920s & a few of the items that matched the patterns. She took great care of these patterns and refolded them with care storing in the original packages. In a few of the packages, I found comics, paper bags, magazine pages that were cut to pattern to (I assume) replace lost pieces.

A few of these patterns were from the late 1800s and must have belonged to her mother, my great grandmother Alice.
